Team Canada-ISEF scores 17 awards at 2011 Intel ISEF
Team Canada-ISEF 2011 returned home with 17 awards from Intel ISEF 2011, held in Los Angeles, California this week, including a First Place Grand Award. The world's largest pre-college celebration of science, Intel ISEF brings together over 1,500 students from nearly 60 nations to compete for over $4 million US in scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and the grand prize: a $50,000 US scholarship.
This year's top Canadian award-winners include:
Calgary, Alberta's Chris Nielsen, who won a First Place Grand Award for Indoor Ground Manifold Tracking through Low-Cost Stereoscopy - an inexpensive, webcam-based system for tracking 3D position and orientation that could find its way into applications such as navigation systems for the visually-impaired or enhanced guidance systems for mobile robotics. Nielsen also won a Second Place Award from the International Society for Optical Engineering;
Lauren Reid, of Uxbridge, Ontario, who picked up two First Place Special Awards from GE Energy and theSociety of Experimental Test Pilotsfor her project that explored ways of improving the efficiency of wind turbines by enabling them to operate at lower wind speeds; and
Adelina Corina Cozma, of Richmond Hill, Ontario, who won a Third Place Grand Award, and two Special Awards for the development of a computer-based audio-visual system to improve the lives of those with autism, auditory-visual integration deficits, and learning disabilities.
